As you get closer to your due date, you will have to prepare your hospital bag. I would suggest having it ready by week 38 at the latest if you are a FTM and sooner if otherwise.
Most of the hospitals in Northern California lets you stay at the hospital for 1-2 days for a normal delivery and 2-3 days for a cesarean delivery unless your doctor recommends a longer stay. Hospitals mostly provide all the essential things for mommy and baby but there may be a few things you want to carry in addition to be more comfortable. If daddy or anyone else is staying overnight with you at the hospital, you will need to carry a few essentials for them as well.
You will come across many blogs and articles listing a whole range of items to carry in your hospital bag. Mommy will most likely be in the gowns given at the hospital unless you brought in your own gown or are expecting visitors. Based on my experience, it is good to carry just the essentials unless you are very particular about things like face wash, shampoo and conditioner. Following are the basic list of items I would recommend having in your hospital bag.
For Mommy
- Clothes to wear on your way back from hospital and in case you are expecting visitors.
- Tooth brush and paste
- Face wash and other toiletries (though they do provide body wash in most cases)
- Mobile Charger
- Water bottle (You will have to continue drinking a lot of water.)
- Hair bands/scrunchies
- Hair brush
For Baby
- Go home dress
- Car Seat(installed)
For Daddy(or the one staying with you)
- Change of clothes for each day and night at hospital (Recommend bringing in warmer clothes as rooms are generally cooler than usual).
- Toiletries
- Slippers or comfortable footwear
- Mobile charger
- Camera and charger
- Protein bars or quick snacks (Highly recommend this to get through the labor)
Mommy will most likely be doing a lot of sleeping and feeding along with the baby. Hospitals provide mommy with socks, sanitary pads, squirt bottle(bring it home along with you!), disposable under wears and medications. Baby is given diapers, hat, swaddle cloth and onesie. Food is also provided for mommy and may have to additionally request a plus one for your guest. You can take back a lot of these home for your comfort and especially the items provided for mommy will be very useful once you are home.
