Surprise surprise! I am pregnant again:)
Things are so very different this time around! As they say, no two pregnancies feel the same but 'boy oh boy', was I in for a surprise!
My first pregnancy was a breeze with no nausea or any other problems whatsoever. But this time, a lot of things happened very very differently.
- Nausea
- I did not have any nausea the first time around. But this time, it was pretty bad in the first trimester with every morning starting with me puking water out. I gradually started to spread my meals into multiple snack portions and that helped me eat better.
- Weakness
- I had extreme weakness for nearly 2-3 weeks in my first trimester which made work very difficult. In fact, I had to inform my manager about me being pregnant just so she does not think I am slacking at work!
- Anemia
- Apparently, many suffer from low iron during pregnancy and I luckily did not have this in my first pregnancy. This time around I had to take the iron supplement which is tricky as you cannot take it with calcium or with food. I took my iron pills in between food while ensuring I haven't had any milk products within past hour. Also, consuming iron pill with vitamin C rich food increases the iron absorption and so small cutie oranges worked perfectly for that.
- Heart burn
- Believe it or not, this was new to me! Almost every pregnant woman complains about bad heartburn but guess I just got lucky first time around as it caught up to me this time. And it was so bad! Calcium(milk or other form) helps with heart burn but iron supplements are meant to be taken nearly 1-2 hours post any type of calcium consumption. So heart burn can get worse when you are anemic as you are limited on when you can take calcium supplements to calm your heart burn.
- Vertigo
- This is not a pregnancy related condition. As such it took a real long time to have this diagnosed as my OBGYN continued running multiple tests whereas I should have instead consulted my general physician doctor. Ultimately, it turned out to be an issue with inner ear crystal that required to be placed back again via some physiotherapy sessions. Vertigo was one of the worst things I have ever experienced and left me feeling so helpless. It felt pretty severe on the first day when I could not even stand on my feet without feeling dizzy and pukish. It got slightly better on second day after I got some medications to help retain food and to help with dizziness but I was still unable to walk steadily on my own for nearly a week.
- Doctor visits
- As most of the tests and visits were something I had done already with my first, I was better prepared this time around and went to all my visits on my own. Unlike the first time when your husband accompanies you on all the doctor visits, it is mostly the mom doing all the required visits and tests while dad takes care of the toddler at home.
- Pregnancy care and pampering:
- Haha! What's that? With a toddler at home, neither mom nor dad had anytime to digest, realize or await the new arrival like the first time around. Both were consumed with thoughts to ensure the toddler continues to get the same attention and care as was given earlier. So between the nausea, other pregnancy conditions and attending to a toddler, taking care of pregnancy or getting the much advised rest just slips through one's mind.
